Job description/responsibilities:
Desk assistants work in the KYW newsroom as an assistant to the editor on duty and the news director. They are responsible for coordinating the retrieval and labeling of sound, transcribing copy from field reporters, answering newsroom phone lines, and updating information such as sports scores, weather and market information. They review press releases under the supervision of the news director and field listener inquiries. They must be able to handle listener inquiries and complaints in a polite, efficient manner. Desk assistants should be able to recognize the urgency of phone calls (sources, breaking news tips, notice of news conferences) and make sure those calls are sent to an individual and not to voicemail. KYW Newsradio is Philadelphia’s first source for weather related school closings and other cancellations. Our desk assistants are an integral part of the KYW School Closing program and are expected to be available for additional hours when the weather dictates.
