The Lightbox Film Center at International House Philadelphia will be holding a film projection workshop exclusively for Drexel students on Thursday, July 27th at 2PM. In the age of digital cinema, film projection in movie theaters has become increasingly scarce. However, thanks to a newfound interest in this old technology, film projection is starting to make a comeback. Come learn all about the art of 16mm and 35mm film projection using the Lightbox Film Center’s state-of-the-art projectors. If interested, please RSVP to Nick Natalicchio at njn27@drexel.edu. 

The Lightbox Film Center at International House Philadelphia is hosting a free screening of the John Carpenter film They Live. Released in 1988, They Live stars former pro-wrestler Rowdy Roddy Piper as John Nada, a drifter who discovers a pair of sunglasses that allows him to wake up to the fact that aliens have taken over the Earth.

The screening is organized in conjunction with the ICA exhibition Myths of the Marble, which considers how the virtual is engaged by contemporary artists as a way to image and imagine the world as a site of possibility and a set of limitations. You can RSVP for the free screening here.

The Philadelphia Film Office is hosting a rally to support the regional film industry. The rally will be held on Saturday, June 3rd. People are encouraged to meet at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, bottom of the Rocky steps, between 10am and 11am. The local film industry creates family sustaining jobs for a huge base of production professionals, support businesses and their employees, and provides outstanding content for and about our city and region. Unique challenges are threatening the ability of our local workforce to be able to live and work in Philadelphia while supporting their families. This rally is to unite and galvanize industry and elected officials into addressing the urgency of supporting the film, TV, commercial, and multi-media industry of Philadelphia. Come out and show your support!

The submission fee is $10 for the first film you submit and $5 for any additional films. You will receive one ticket to the festival and pre-screening reception for that first submission, but not the subsequent ones. All money goes towards cash prizes. Westphest will be held on Thursday, May 18th in the URBN Annex Screening Room at 7:30PM. The pre-screening reception at Landmark starts at 5:00PM. Food and drinks will be provided.

From taking early photos on tour with Ike and Tina Turner and capturing the early CBGB/Max’s Kansas City scene, to hanging out with John and Yoko and covering current stadium rockers such as Green Day, Bob Gruen has always been at the right place at the right time. As Alice Cooper says, what makes Gruen’s work so memorable is that “he always got the money shot.” Gruen’s photographs take the viewer backstage, on tour and into intimate moments – bearing witness to the rise of rock and roll and punk.

Gruen will appear at the Pearlstein Gallery on Wednesday, May 3rd at 6:00PM with music journalist and rock and roll correspondent Rona Ellio. The event is also a chance to see Bob Gruen’s exhibit at the Pearlstein Gallery, which just received a rave review from the Philadelphia Inquirer.

This year’s Drexel Writing Festival will be from Tuesday May 9th to Thursday, May 11th and will feature multi-media presentations, workshops, and live performances. As part of the festival, there also will be several film screenings with special guests. A screening of Almost Famous with ex Rolling Stone journalist Richard Abowitz will be Wednesday, May 10th from 6:30PM to 9:30PM, and a screening of Buffalo 66 with co-writer and Drexel Cinema & Television Professor Alison Bagnall will be Thursday, May, 11th from 7:00PM to 9:30PM. Both screenings will take place at the Pearlstein Gallery located at 3401 Filbert Street. All events are FREE!
